The Brazilian federal government recently announced that it has created a total of five new protected areas in the Southern Amazon, totaling approximately 2.6 million hectares. This announcement was one of the last measures passed by outgoing Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff.

The new protected areas now represent more than three times the previous total, and are located in the “mosaico do Apuí” within the state of Amazonas, where the agricultural frontier has been fast-encroaching.
