Four days prior to the end of its mandate, the departing Peruvian Administration approved the categorization of three Reserves for Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACIs). The reserves are located in the Ucayali region of Peru, and make up a total area of more than 1.5 million hectares.
The Reserves were created at the regional level more than a decade ago, but until now had not been recognized by the national government, making them legally vulnerable. This new status strengthens protections intended to keep areas inhabited by PIACIs off limits to development, and allows for the implementation of active patrols (and other measures) to reduce dangers of outsiders entering the area, and prepare contingency procedures should such contact occur.
