The Moore Foundation’s Community Fund provides support to local nonprofit organizations in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties that the foundation would not typically fund under its primary program areas.

Each year, a volunteer team of Moore Foundation administrative staff work together to select an annual theme for making contributions through the foundation’s Community Fund. The Community Fund, which is separate from the foundation’s typical programmatic funding, allocates $500,000 annually to provide local support to public charities in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties – where our co-founders Gordon and Betty Moore called home.

In honor of the foundation’s co-founders Gordon and Betty Moore’s dedication to lifelong learning, in 2023 the Community Fund focused on investing in our youth for future success. The organizations selected support efforts that make a positive difference in the lives of students ages 8-20 years old by providing them with tools and resources for a brighter future.

The 2023 Community Fund organizations represent a range of programs for youth focusing on practical life skills, extending educational opportunities, and leadership development. These programs include academics to close the achievement gap, preparing for college success, targeted skill training and development, and attaining career goals.

2022 Community Fund

With communities coming out of a COVID-19 quarantine and returning to shared spaces, the Community Fund’s focus of giving in 2022 looked toward encouraging and creating access for people to enjoy the outdoors. The theme focused on organizations supporting efforts that provide resources for community members to get outdoors through outdoor education, outdoor recreation/sports, and hands-on outdoor conservation.

The organizations supported in 2022 range in service: providing guided access to the outdoors, teaching community members how to care for public parks, and also included the use of horseback riding to bring therapeutic benefits to people with disabilities.

See the full list of recipients below and visit their websites to learn how they're getting the community outdoors.
