Asking now might keep you from coming back later.

The medical team just made rounds and the news is good: You’re ready to go home. Or are you? At some point during your hospital stay – well before you’re being wheeled out the door – here’s what you should ask staff members. And make sure you’re clear on the answers.

1. The Basics

“I encourage patients to advocate for themselves and ask doctors simple, straightforward questions,” says Eileen Brinker, transitional care manager at the UCSF Medical Center. “Why am I here, what are you doing for me in the hospital, how can I take better care for myself?”
