The Skeena Salmon Program and the Pacific Salmon Foundation recently launched the Pacific Salmon Explorer: a customized, online data visualization tool that provides a deep understanding of the information that exists for salmon populations and their habitats in British Columbia’s Skeena River watershed. Increased knowledge and good scientific information about salmon populations and their habitats are crucial for effective conservation and management of wild Pacific Salmon. The new tool allows users, with a click on a map of the watershed, to access:
- Information on the 55 geographically and genetically distinct Skeena salmon populations and key pressures on their habitats.
- Sixty years of stock assessment data on Skeena salmon populations.
- A snapshot of the baseline condition of the Skeena River estuary.
- Interactive maps displaying the risk of degradation to freshwater salmon habitats from multiple human and environmental pressures.
- Maps showing the location of both existing and future resource development projects in the Skeena River watershed and estuary.
The datasets, maps, and figures can also be downloaded and printed at www.salmonexplorer.ca.
