The Moore Foundation’s community fund provides support to local nonprofit organizations in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties that would not typically be considered for funding under the Moore foundation’s four main program areas.
Each year, the community fund team selects a theme and works to identify organizations that would benefit from funding. In 2019, the community fund supported organizations that provide important services for individuals immigrating to the U.S. from countries across the globe. The theme recognized the immigration challenges currently facing our country – there is a strong need for legal support and community services that provide safe and equal access to the immigrant population.
Recognizing immigration in Silicon Valley
Due to the large number of refugees residing here, Santa Clara County has been designated as a “Refugee-Impacted County”. More than 18 percent of the population in Santa Clara County cannot afford basic necessities without financial assistance. Many refugees who are affected have not received the opportunity to develop their English language skills, and are falling through the cracks of our system. PRERNA is one organization providing accessible support services that these families are desperately seeking.
The community fund evokes the spirit of giving that unpins the foundation and allows us to be of tangible help to organizations in our community that we otherwise would not provide grants to. We are grateful for the work of our 2019 community fund recipients, and to all the others who are helping to ensure immigrants have access to services to help them better assimilate into our society and country.
