Foundation president Harvey Fineberg, M.D., Ph.D, recently penned an op-ed for the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), discussing conflicts of interest and how they ultimately play a role in trust and transparency.

He indicates that when setting financial thresholds for conflict of interest, policies to guide disclosure should be explicit and public.

"Preservation of trust is the essential purpose of policies about conflict of interest. Physicians play many roles — caring for individual patients, protecting the public’s health, engaging in research, reporting scientific and clinical discoveries, crafting professional guidelines, and advising policy makers and regulatory bodies, among others."
