CIFAR and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation are launching a new joint venture to advance marine science and quantum materials. The venture brings fellows from CIFAR together with investigators from two Moore Foundation programs to stimulate new collaborations.

The three-year agreement has two components. One will open meetings of the CIFAR’s Quantum Materials program to investigators from the Moore Foundation’s Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Systems Initiative in order to foster collaboration among researchers in the US, Canada, and several other countries. Leading researchers will explore important topics in condensed matter physics with the potential to create transformative new technologies.

The other component is a collaboration between CIFAR’s researchers in Integrated Microbial Biodiversity and other CIFAR programs and the Moore Foundation’s Marine Microbiology Initiative. Through joint workshops, which will be sourced through a competitive process, the two organizations will explore the complexity of microbial life in the oceans and its importance in marine microbial ecology and evolution.

“We’re delighted to work with CIFAR in these important areas of exploration,” said Vicki Chandler, Chief Program Officer for science at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. “CIFAR brings a depth of experience in creating international research networks, and this effort will help us advance our commitment to accelerating the pace of scientific discovery.”

“We look forward to this partnership with the Moore Foundation,” says CIFAR Vice-President, Research Pekka Sinervo. “It is a major intellectual collaboration between two top international institutions that brings together many of the world’s best researchers. With more high-calibre minds working together on these critical areas of importance, we strengthen the connections within the global scientific community and its capacity to solve problems that matter to our world.”

About CIFAR: CIFAR creates knowledge that is transforming our world. Established in 1982, the Institute brings together interdisciplinary groups of extraordinary researchers from around the globe to address questions and challenges of importance to the world. Our networks help support the growth of research leaders and are catalysts for change in business, government and society. CIFAR is generously supported by the governments of Canada, British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec, Canadian and international partners, as well as individuals, foundations and corporations.

About the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation: The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation believes in bold ideas that create enduring impact in the areas of science, environmental conservation and patient care. Intel co-founder Gordon and his wife Betty established the foundation to create positive change around the world and at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. Science looks for opportunities to transform — or even create — entire fields by investing in early-stage research, emerging fields and top research scientists. Environmental conservation efforts promote sustainability, protect critical ecological systems and align conservation needs with human development. Patient care focuses on eliminating preventable harms and unnecessary healthcare costs through meaningful engagement of patients and their families in a supportive, redesigned healthcare system.
