The Amazon stretches across Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. Among these, Brazil--which aims to drop "net new deforestation" to zero within the next 15 years--holds the largest portion of the rainforest, and the Brazilian Amazon has been a focus of the foundation's Amazon-Andes Initiative for more than a decade.
Two recent articles by Chris Arsenault offer statistics related to Brazil's efforts to combat deforestation and feature the role that the national environment enforcement agency, IBAMA, is playing in that fight. They also demonstrate the need to address structural challenges in the Amazon, across multiple sectors and in the context of a continued need and sustainable pathways for communities to improve livelihoods.
