Caring for older adults - people 65 years or older - is a pressing issue in the U.S. The population is aging rapidly and is expected to double over the next 40 or so years, increasing from more than 46 million people in 2014 to 98 million people by 2060. The life expectancy of people is also increasing. Individuals who reach 65 years are expected to live, on average, an additional 19 years. Many of these people are managing multiple chronic conditions and experiencing limitations in how they function which requires a great number of resources and supports in their community and at home, particularly in the later phase of life.

Currently, the soaring number of Americans who choose home care over nursing homes have no organized national system to count on that guides the hiring, education or oversight of their caregivers.
