In her piece: "It's Time to Stop Pretending Patients Don't Care About Their Medical Records," Fast Company health and technology reporter, Christina Farr, examines a multitude of challenges in accessing one's medical record. The challenges range from logistics to beliefs that patients should not have access to them. As Farr points out, regardless of how anyone feels about medical records - physicians and patients alike - patients have the right to access them.

A movement to make access to patient records easier and more commonplace, is afoot with OpenNotes. With OpenNotes patients gain access to the notes written by their doctors, nurses and other clinicians during a visit. Having access to medical notes gives people the chance to read and discuss them with their care provider, which can make care more efficient, improve communication and most importantly help patients become more active in their health and health care.
