Foundation hires Erin Hart to lead communications department

August 17, 2012

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation today announced the appointment of Erin Hart as head of the new communications department.

One of the ten largest private foundations in the US, Moore created this position after recognizing the need for more communications support for the organization as a whole and its grantees around the world. Moore focuses its work on environmental conservation, science and patient care.

As director of communications Hart will oversee internal and external communications efforts supporting the organization’s programs, initiatives, grantees and other partners, including the Foundation's brand.

“Erin’s experience in public interest communications–and on the environmental, patient-care and science issues that the Foundation cares about–made her the ideal candidate to launch this new department,” Foundation President Steve McCormick said. “We are pleased that she has joined our team and will help us better share what we learn and support our staff and grantees.”

Hart was previously at Fenton, a communications firm focused on progressive social change. Prior to that she owned her own firm, worked at GolinHarris and held communications posts at government agencies and research organizations.

“Moore focuses on some of the most challenging issues our world is facing: how to care for each other, how to care for the planet and how to learn more about the world around us,” Hart said. “I’m eager to take the work of foundation staff and grantees and share it with even more people who can learn from it and work to create lasting change.”

Hart earned her bachelor’s in journalism from the University of Florida, where she currently works with first-ever chair in public interest communications to attract students to the field. Her work has been recognized with SABRE, Wilmer and Women in Social Responsibility awards. She has been published in a variety of outlets and speaks and provides training at events across the nation.
