Launch of First Marine Closed Containment Tank for Salmon Aquaculture in BC
Jan. 17, 2011

Middle Bay Sustainable Aquaculture Institute (MBSAI) and AgriMarine successfully launched the first marine-based, commercial-scale, closed containment tank for farming salmon on January 17th. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation contributed partial funding for the project, through a grant to MBSAI. The demonstration project will test the the technological feasibility of “closed containment” salmon production and could provide compelling evidence of its commercial viability, as an alternative to conventional open-net systems which put wild salmon as risk. The Foundation is also investing in on-land closed containment technology pilot projects.
