Center for Environmental Studies of Latin American

The University of Texas at Austin, along with the Fundacion Ecuatoriana de Estudios Ecológicos and the Center for Environmental Studies of Latin American, is using this grant to integrate conservation with community demands in eastern Ecuador. Management of these indigenous lands will focus on biodiversity protection as well as strengthening community-based governance of natural resources. Outcomes include strengthening capacity of three indigenous communities (Zapara, Shiwiar, and Achuar) for long-term resource management and biodiversity conservation, creation of management plans for 1.5 million hectares of indigenous lands, and development of a unified conservation strategy for the greater Pastaza watershed—some 5 million hectares.
