Grant Summary

Tides Canada Foundation
British Columbia Salmon Conservation - Great Bear Rainforest
Term Amount Date Approved
12 months $5,842,736 Mar. 2006
Purpose
Together with commitments from the Hewlett, Packard, Wilburforce and Rockerfeller Brothers Fund foundations, GBMF’s pledge will seed a US $100 million fund that will be used as conservation investments and incentives to influence the outcome of land use planning efforts in the Great Bear Rainforest (GBR) region. The results of these land use plans will determine the level of protection in the GBR and ensure suitable habitat for salmon long into the future. There are two primary outcomes associated with this grant: 1) four million acres of pristine temperate rainforest, including approximately 100 pristine lower-elevation valleys, permanently protected on the coast of British Columbia; and 2) an ecosystem-based resource management regime established on the entire 21 million acres of the Great Bear Rainforest.
