Purpose
The California Institute of Technology, in collaboration with the University of Washington and the University of California at Berkeley, will analyze the past 80 years of earthquakes in southern California to improve rupture forecasts, and develop both ground-level and building-specific shaking algorithms to determine when automatic shutdown of industrial processes could mitigate serious damage or injury. The knowledge gained will contribute to the development of a west coast prototype earthquake early warning system capable of providing robust advance warning—ranging from tens of seconds to minutes—of the size, extent and timing of imminent earthquakes.
