Grant Summary

University of San Francisco, Department of Environmental Science
Measuring Carbon Sequestration in San Francisco Bay Wetlands
Term Amount Date Approved
26 months $294,892 Nov. 2008
Purpose
This grant will increase scientific knowledge of carbon sequestration and sediment accumulation rates in San Francisco Bay tidal wetlands in order to improve the conservation, restoration, and overall management of wetlands in the face of projected climate change. Quality scientific data will support the effort to formally certify wetland restoration activities with the California Climate Action Registry. Certification will establish wetlands restoration projects as eligible to receive payment for emission reduction credits, which will increase available funds for the acquisition and restoration of these critical ecosystems.
